MAS.965 Spring 2003: Electronic Skins and Dense Sensor Networks
MAS 965 (H) Special Topics in Media Technology Sensate Media: An Exploration of Electronic Skins and Dense Sensor Networks (0-6-0) Spring Term 2003 Mondays, 10 - 11:30 am in E15-335 This class is a seminar intended to explore and flesh out (no pun intended) the state-of-the-art of extremely dense sensor aggregates and define a vision of "Sensate Media" or multimodal electronic "skin". The class will survey biological inspiration (e.g., structure and capabilities of animate skin), fine-grained sensor architectures (e.g., robotic skin, smart matter, and smart skins for vehicles and structures, such as sensor-embedded composites, etc.), distributed computing (decentralized pattern-recognition, signal processing, estimation, control, emergence), and touch on current research in sensor networks. Reading materials will be assigned at each lecture. Class participation is important, and students will be picked to present in particular areas each week. An additional 6 units of credit may be awarded for students choosing to do a final project or research paper. Class limited to 10 people. Permission of instructor required Instructor: Joseph Paradiso TA: Josh Lifton Syllabus: The classes will touch on the topics below. The lectures will involve heavy class participation and discussion. We will be inviting occasional guest lecturers from MIT and the vicinity that are distinguished in some of these areas.
Preliminary Reading List: The reading list will mainly come from conference and journal papers. It will be dynamically adjusted week-week, and includes excerpts from:
