Session 12 - Magma (France), Porcupine Tree (UK), Mörglbl (France) and Minimum Vital (France)

Due to popular demand, I'm bringing back our Prog Rock concert video screening session for one evening this coming Monday night - this will be open to everybody affiliated with our building, as well as the attendees of the IEEE Social Computing Conference that we're hosting next week. Brief description below - it will start at 7:30, and run circa 2 hours. Be there or be square, as they say. -J-

On Monday evening Oct. 10, we will be showing concert videos on the large video wall in the Media Lab's third floor atrium. The continues a seminar series on progressive rock that was held last term by Prof. Joe Paradiso, and will feature performances by three exceptional and extremely proficient ensembles hailing from France (coincidently, all filed under "M"). The first band we'll feature is Magma. Playing music that harkens to John Coltrane, Carl Orff, and Philip Glass, while signing in their own unique language, they give one of the most compelling live performances you'll ever see. We featured other music by Magma in the first session of this series. The next band is Minimum Vital - blending medieval influences with extremely virtuosic prog rock, they are always a joy to see perform. Finally, we'll show a few pieces by Mörglbl - a power trio who adroitly balance fusion jazz against heavy metal, but keep a strong sense of humor throughout. If time permits, I may even screen a bit of a Porcupine Tree show (OK, they're British, and don't begin with M, but awesome enough to make an exception) - The program will run about two hours.
