Description:

This class will explore the ways in which electronic music is controlled and performed. A solid historical perspective will be presented, tracing the development of various families of musical controllers and instruments from their genesis in the late 1800s onwards. Design principles and engineering detail will also be given for various interesting and classic controllers. This class will involve lively discussion of current topics in the control of computer music and performance, including computer mapping of sensor signals and transduced gesture onto musical sound.

Units:

0-12-0 (Special Topics)

Time:

Monday 1PM - 4PM

Mechanics

Credit will be assigned based on class participation and a final paper or project. The project/paper will need to be approved by the instructors criteria will be that it will explore a relevant area of electronic music controller research or historical development. Class discussion will be encouraged Id like this course to define the state-of-the-art in this field. Video clips will be shown where relevant (especially for those controllers coming from outside the media lab).
